Today Joel, Raquel, Nathan, Andrea, David, and Corita all went to the First Presbyterian Church of Las Vegas where we attended when Joel and Raquel were little. It was such a joy to be back in our home church, where we are still officially members. The sermon seemed to be written for us, retelling the parable of sowing seeds as sowing the faith. The pastor told an anecdote about colleccting grasshoppers as a kid and putting them in low-lid coffee cans. When they would jump, they would hit their heads. Finally, they would stop jumping, and even if the lid was taken off they would not attempt to jump again. The pastor told us that despite all our failed attempts to sow faith (in ourselves or in others), there is undoubtedly fertile ground, however small or hard to find it may seem. We need to keep jumping; the lid is off.
After the service, there was a social hour where we were able to catch up with many friends. Then, two families (the Salmans and the Linders) took us out to lunch. The wait staff must have been happy to see us go, as we spent many hours there reconnecting. We were sorry not to have a camara today as we saw so many great people today.
That evening we met with some other friends in the park before going to see Cars 2 in the local movie theatre. Joel was so entertained by the movie that he didn’t realize we had popcorn right in front of him for most of the movie. Afterward he wondered why we hadn’t bought any! Poor Joel!
