On this day we headed up to the Armand Hammer United World College located in the Montezuma castle just outside Las Vegas. We were able to speak to a member of the staff who told us all the ins and outs of applying to their two-year international baccealaureate program. It was long, detailed, and boring for Joel, but Raquel is very interested. It’s hard to believe we are looking at college programs already, but since the nine years since we left Las Vegas have gone by so quickly, we imagine the next four years will probably fly by as well.
During our time in Las Vegas, Joel devoured The Essential Calvin and Hobbs, his new favorite comic. We hope Calvin will remain a fictional character, rather than becoming a part of his persona. We made Honduran food for Dianne, Cordia, and Robin for lunch and we were able to take our time because the Amtrak had been delayed.
Finally, the kids and David were able to board the train. They enjoyed the train before they even got on it, because David taught them how to put coins on the rails and watch them get squished.
They were taking a trip from Las Vegas to the next town over (Lamy) just to experience the train. The trip was fun and perhaps we’ll be able to add some pictures aboard later. (One passenger took some photos and said she would send them, but hasn’t yet.)
Once we got to Santa Fe, we easily found our friends’ home. Kim Spray was Corita’s college roommate in their freshman year. Kim, her husband Geron, and their daughter Clara visited us in Honduras two-and-a-half years ago and we were returning the favor. The Sprays had some delightful New Mexican gifts for us, including tee-shirts, piñon brittle (one with chili in it), and green and red chili jelly. The kids picked up right where the left off, and immediately began playing. After a while, we headed downtown to the historical plaza where we had a delicious pizza dinner.
